Your facial cleansing routine is a beautiful time to give yourself a mini facial massage, which can increase your total skin care benefits by improving circulation and flushing toxins. Many people rush through cleansing. Instead, we advocate spending at least 3 to 5 minutes giving your skin a gentle massage. This works the natural cleanser deeper into the skin, releases tension from muscles, and encourages new nutrients to be delivered to the cells. Sluggish skin can often be improved just by this simple bit of time spent.

Consider doing a double cleanse if the skin is exceptionally dirty or if you wear heavy makeup. If you are removing makeup use a gently textured washcloth to rinse the cleanser. This will pick up more of the makeup than just using your hands.

We advocate washing skin twice per day – once in the morning and once in the evening.  However, if you choose just one time to clean then evening would be the preferred time to remove irritants and makeup before bed.

Always use warm water to wash your face. Studies have shown hot water can dry out your skin, increase the likeliness cleansers will irritate your skin, and even cause damage to your facial capillaries and the barrier function of the skin’s surface. Once your face is clean, use a splash of cold water to close your pores.

You may want to investigate the quality of the water where you live as a vital part of your facial cleansing experience.  Water quality varies drastically depending on your locale.  It could contain impurities that may irritate sensitive skin. You can address this problem by getting a water filtration system either directly at your tap or installing a whole-house water filtration system if you own your building.

Always moisturise after your skin is cleansed, this is particularly important at night, even if you have oily or acne-prone skin, as your face loses more moisture overnight than at any point.

Facial cleansing tips – what to look for in a cleanser.

First and foremost, all cleansers must be gentle, cleanse thoroughly without drying skin, not feel greasy or tacky after rinsing and be irritant-free. Choose a cleanser with no scent or only with natural essential oils. No synthetic fragrances whatsoever. An organic face cleanser has to smell great with intoxicating, pleasant and luxurious scents with certified organic essential oils.

Sturdy enough to remove dirt, bacteria, excess oil, pollution, and other harmful residues, to leave your face feeling fresh and clean.

Avoid synthetic preservatives as they may irritate the skin, or damage the skin’s microbiome.  Choose natural, mild preservation methods or waterless products.

Choose a product that makes your skin feel comfortable and hydrated after washing, not “squeaky.”  That squeaky feeling is a sign that you have removed too much oil from your skin. The skin absolutely must have some oil content.  Sebum and natural oils keep skin comfortable and flexible and prevent water loss from occurring throughout the day.  Oil is your friend, and so you need to use a mild cleanser that removes dirt without overly stripping oils.  Even better, if it can add back some healthy, vitamin-rich oils, you are getting ahead of the game, replenishing moisture to leave your skin feeling soft, hydrated and glowing.

Look at cleansers that contain ingredients that exfoliate, remove dead skin cells, clears pores, eliminate blackheads, and improves circulation. Fresh fruit extracts contain potent enzymes which will remove dead skin cells, clear pores and resolve excess oil. These ingredients get rid of “dull skin” and restore one’s “youthful glow” for a clear and bright complexion.

If you have Acne or Rosacea skin choose a cleanser that contains calming, healing, soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Look for Calendula, Clays, Cucumber, Oatmeal, Arnica, Chamomile, Vitamin E, Green tea, Avocado, Aloe Vera, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Manuka honey, Neem powder, and Lavender.
